Research Interests
Research Summary
Our lab is chiefly interested in selective metabolic modulators in the diet. The compounds that we study include polyunsaturated fatty acids, isoflavones and metabolites derived from these dietary constituents. As signaling molecules and components of phospholipids, these molecules exert potent effects on mitochondrial and insulin-dependent energy metabolism and inflammatory pathways.
Goals include:
- Determine the impact of fatty acid moieties and isoflavones on whole body energy metabolism as regulated by interactions between adipose, liver and muscle tissues
- Elucidate mechanistic targets of dietary bioactives to impact mitochondrial functions
- Identify the pathogenesis of muscle atrophy related to aging, cognitive decline, sarcopenia and cancer cachexia
Models include:
- murine models
- cell culture models
- Randomized controlled trials
- observational clinical studies
