FST Awards over $185,000 to Undergraduates

Aug. 31, 2020

In a year when much of the news has been negative, many undergraduates in the Department of Food Science and Technology (FST) will begin the year on a more positive note. FST's substantial scholarship program awarded $185,250 to its undergraduates for the 2020-2021 year!

Curious about what a food scientist studies? Food science students are foodies who use chemistry, microbiology, engineering, and psychology to design better food products for the market. This broad discipline encompasses food processing and packaging, food safety, sensory studies, and more. FST offers three majors: Food Science and Technology, Food Business Management, and Culinary Science. From food product development to product marketing to culinary preparation, our graduates help to feed the world.

After graduation, our alumni go on to successful careers with companies including General Mills, Nestle, Abbott, and The J.M. Smucker Company, among others. Other graduates choose to start their own businesses. Several of FST’s scholarship funds were established by successful alumni who wanted to give back by funding future food scientists. FST graduate William Hildebolt went on to become Vice President of Research and Development at Campbell’s Soup, where he led the development of Prego spaghetti sauce. To give back to his alma mater, he established The William and Sandra Hildebolt Innovation and Entrepreneurial Endowed Fund. Alumni and entrepreneurs Thomas and Patricia Brundige founded Total Ultimate Foods, which became one of the leading manufacturers of dry food products in the industry. In 1998, Thomas’s family and friends established the Thomas P. and Patricia L. Brundige Food Science and Technology Program Fund in his memory.
