Food Science and Technology News: January 2026 Department Highlights

  • The Department recently hosted the Annual State FFA Food Science Career Development Event. This portion of the contest included 87 high school students from 27 schools at the state level. Serving as superintendents of this year’s contest was Food Science and Technology  alumni Emily Kessler (BS '12) from The Wendy's Company, Lisa Budd (BS '14) from T. Marzetti, and Dr. Srilatha Kolluri from the Department of Food Science and Technology.  Volunteer efforts were spearheaded by Dr. Kolluri and included FST students, staff and faculty. The top four scoring students receive scholarships to attend OSU Food Science."
  • Dr. Luis Rodriguez-Saona recently received a funding award from John Bean Technologies for his research with Fourier-transform near-infrared (FT-NIR) spectroscopy sensing for rapid and non-destructive screening of oil quality.
  • Research from the lab of Dr. Chris Simons, led by PhD student Adam Chismar was recently published in Food Quality and Preference, introducing a novel approach for understanding the gap between stated liking and actual consumer choice. The study evaluates three takeaway conditions—scarcity, opportunity cost, and abundance—and shows how these contexts shape real purchasing behavior.
  • Congratulations to Veeramani Karuppuchamy on receiving an Outstanding Graduate Research Award. This award recognizes and celebrates graduate student success in publishing high quality research in a timely manner. Veeramani is a PhD student and is advised by Dr. Osvaldo Campanella.
