A legacy of excellence

Established in 2013, the Hall of Distinction recognizes graduates and friends of The Ohio State University Department of Food Science and Technology who have made significant contributions to the food science and technology profession. This prestigious honor celebrates individuals whose achievements, leadership, service, and engagement have advanced the field while bringing distinction to the department, the university, and their communities.

Hall of Distinction honorees are recognized for

2025 inductees

Mr. Lamar Hendricks III received a BS in Food Science from The Ohio State University. He began his career at Peter Eckrich, where he implemented the first USDA-approved Total Quality Control Plan in the U.S. He later held senior roles at Hillshire Farm/Kahn’s and Sara Lee Corporation, retiring as Director of Regulatory Compliance. His work included leadership in HACCP, SSOP, labeling and sanitation programs across multiple facilities. Lamar served on national committees for the American Meat Institute and USDA task forces and helped develop and deliver labeling courses for industry at Ohio State. He also served on the Ohio State Food Science and Technology building campaign. His decorated military service and industry leadership reflect a lifelong commitment to excellence, education and public service.

Dr. Ken Lee received a Ph.D. in Food Science from the University of Massachusetts. During his 16-year tenure as chair of the Ohio State Department of Food Science and Technology, he unified academic programs, led a successful $12 million campaign to build the Parker Food Science and Technology Building and recruited and retained several nationally and internationally renowned food scientists and engineers from the academic and private sectors. He co-founded the Food Innovation Center and secured over $7 million in research funding. Dr. Lee is a Fellow of AAAS and IUFoST and served in leadership roles with IFT, FDA and Phi Tau Sigma. His contributions to interdisciplinary research, academic governance and industry partnerships have significantly elevated the department’s national and global reputation.

Mr. Steven Luebbers received both BS and MS degrees in Food Science from The Ohio State University. He spent 37 years at Abbott Laboratories, where he led product development for infant and pediatric nutrition brands including Similac, PediaSure and Pedialyte. His work resulted in multiple patents and innovations in nutrient stability, emulsification, and sensory quality. Steve managed teams that developed human milk fortifiers and oligosaccharide-enriched formulas for premature infants. He mentored young scientists, many from Ohio State, and received several presidential awards for his contributions. Outside of work, Steve volunteers with prison reentry programs and supports underserved communities. His career reflects technical excellence, compassionate leadership and a lasting impact on health and nutrition.
